Your needs are the first thing I consider when preparing for a molecular annotation screening project -- starting with a standard set of questions that range from gene(s) of interest, variant of interest, donor criteria, sample criteria, detection limits of assay and platform preference.

Clients generally require a specific number of mutant samples for their internal analysis, which is where I begin. By determining the incidence rate of the mutation, I can calculate how many cases will need to be screened to provide the desired number of mutant samples. Following this, I work with our internal team to determine how many samples we are able to able to test, through either our on-hand tissue bank or through sourcing specific for a project.

My next step is to work with you, the client to determine how the samples need to be tested. This will take into account if you are validating an assay, in the discovery phase, and other parameters such as assay robustness. I want to ensure that we run the assays as you require them. Once I have the assay identified, I can now work to ensure that we achieve good results, taking special note of the isolation method for each specific assay type, but also ensuring that the sample input is optimized as necessary for the assay being used.

Our team at BioIVT has experience in isolating nucleic acids from thousands of samples, and our protocols and knowledge reflect that experience. BioIVT also has a dedicated project management team. Successful projects do not just come from successful science, but also from successful planning. It is my role to ensure that our team, who are experienced in working with multiple validated third-party testing partners, provide a process that is as smooth as possible for our clients

Heather Manza, M.S., Science Associate III

I am a Science Associate III at BioIVT. As a member of the Molecular Biology team, I run Molecular Annotation Services. I started my career earning a Master’s Degree in Molecular Microbiology from Wayne State University. After applying myself as a subject matter expert and scientist at a clinical testing laboratory for pre-implantation genetic testing, I moved to the University of Michigan using viruses for genetic research. I brought my genetics experience to BioIVT to help clients with molecular annotation and molecular biology needs.
